Valentine Note Crafts Kids Can Make for Friends
Handmade valentines are a sweet way for kids to connect, but elaborate crafts can quickly become overwhelming. These ideas keep things simple and heartfelt: quick-to-make cards, easy packaging and safe materials. Each project can be completed in one sitting and includes clear guidance on adult-only tasks and how to keep small parts out of young children’s reach.
Materials and prep
Gather cardstock, pre-cut shapes, washable markers, stickers and envelopes. Do the adult-only cutting of cardstock and any hole-punching for ribbon ahead of time. For very young children, pre-fold cards and have stickers and markers ready so they can finish them with minimal supervision.
Small-parts caution: save small charms or beads for older kids and keep them in a sealed container away from children under 3.
Idea 1 — Sticker surprise cards
Fold cardstock into small cards and let children arrange stickers on the front and write a short message inside. This is quick and virtually mess-free. Use themed sticker packs and offer a practice sticker sheet so children can warm up before applying to the final card.
Low-cost alternative: cut postcard-sized pieces from cereal boxes and decorate them similarly to save money and reduce waste.
Idea 2 — Thumbprint heart cards
Use washable ink pads or washable paint for thumbprint hearts. Press two thumbprints together to make a heart shape and add a simple message with a marker. Adult task: supervise paint use and help younger children line up prints. Cleanup: keep wipes on hand and have a designated wet bin for used wipes and paper towels.
If ink pads are unavailable, use stickers or pre-cut hearts for a similar effect.
