Make-and-Chill Frozen Yogurt Berry Pops With Kids
Frozen yogurt berry pops are a simple no-bake cooling treat that children enjoy making and eating. Because they involve freezing and often a wooden stick, adults must manage food safety (especially dairy handling), cutting, and the insertion of the stick. This article walks through every step so the activity is predictable and safe.
Ingredients, tools, and safety reminders
You’ll need small silicone molds or paper cups, popsicle sticks or thick plastic sticks, 2 cups yogurt, 1 cup mashed or finely chopped berries, honey or maple syrup (optional, for ages 1+), and a freezer. Safety reminders: keep dairy refrigerated until ready to assemble and don’t let yogurt sit at room temperature for more than two hours. Use adult-cut fruit for size and remove any pits. If anyone in the home has a dairy allergy, substitute with a labeled nondairy yogurt and check ingredient lists for cross-contact.
If using wooden sticks, wait until the pops are partly frozen before inserting to reduce the risk of the stick sliding through the mold and creating a sharp point you might worry about.
Setup and adult-only steps
1. Wash hands and sanitize the workspace. Place all molds on a tray for easy transfer to the freezer.
2. Adult-only cutting: halve berries or chop larger fruit into small pieces (about 1/2-inch) and remove seeds/pits. If using frozen berries, thaw and drain excess liquid so the mixture isn’t watery.
3. Combine yogurt and fruit in a bowl. If the mixture is very thick, thin slightly with a little milk or juice to make it scoopable but not runny. For very young children, adults should handle stirring to ensure even distribution of fruit pieces.
Child-friendly assembly
1. Give each child a small spoon and let them spoon the yogurt mixture into molds. Encourage them to tap the tray gently so the mixture settles.
2. For safety, an adult should insert sticks only after the molds are partly frozen—about 30–45 minutes in most freezers. This reduces the chance the stick dislodges during freezing and creates a slipping hazard.
3. Freeze until solid, usually 3–4 hours. Once frozen, remove pops by running the outside of the mold under warm water briefly—do not microwave. Serve on a small plate.
