Kitchen Measuring: A Gentle First Lesson in Estimating

Materials and respectful, low-cost substitutes

If you prefer a no-food approach, use beans, coins, or paperclips as stand-ins. Practise measuring and simple calculations
Step-by-step measuring: Show how to level a measuring cup, read marks on a measuring jug, or use a ruler to measure length. Let children do the pouring at supervised distance and take turns checking the marks. For non-food materials, label containers and teach children to match amounts by using the same scoop or tool.
